AAA games can take up lots of storage space these days, especially big shooters that contain lots of different maps and modes, but we’re glad to say that the upcoming Battlefield 6 seems to have been pretty well optimised for Xbox Series X and S consoles.
With the preload going live in the last few days, we’ve installed the title on both Xbox consoles – and there’s a big difference in their overall SSD footprint. The full install is just north of 40GB on Series S, while the Series X version is just more than 70GB to download right now; almost double the size!
The main reason for this vast difference is the existence of additional ‘HD packs’ for the Xbox Series X version of BF6. The game is ‘modular’ to download — much like Call of Duty these days — where you can pick which modes you want to install and play. However, each modular aspect then has an optional HD install on Series X, but those are omitted from the Series S version.

This leads to a much smaller install on the cheaper Xbox system with everything selected, and that’s good to see. We know that the game has been well-optimised for Series S — with its 1080p / 60FPS targets — and it’s nice to see that optimisation extended to file size as well. Storage space is a rare and valued commodity on Series S, particularly the 512GB edition.
Of course, Series X users can choose to skip these HD installs and play with less quality too, which is also a nice option to have for players who are struggling with storage space. Options are good, and Battlefield Studios seems to be providing them with BF6!
