‘It’s a Huge Upgrade’: PS5 Pro Poised to Improve Massively in 2026

PSSR U Red E?

Sony’s not been shy about the fact that it’s actively working on improvements to the PS5 Pro, and specifically its PSSR upscaling technology.

Support for the system has been mixed since the supercharged system’s release in 2024: some games benefit greatly from the enhanced hardware, while others have undoubtedly underwhelmed.

Hardware snoop Moore’s Law Is Dead spoke to an anonymous developer about what fans can expect from future upgrades, and the improvements are said to be “huge”.

Without getting too deeply into the weeds, as part of its work on Project Amethyst with AMD – which is also laying the groundwork for the PS6 – the platform holder plans to introduce a new version of PSSR next year which will greatly improve image quality.

This will resolve higher quality images without the need for certain parts of input data, suggesting to us that it’ll still produce a clean image from an imperfect source. It’ll also, as a result, decrease the amount of memory required to run and reduce GPU processing times.

So, in short, it’ll produce a cleaner image quicker with less memory – all things, we can agree, sound like positives overall.

Sony also seems to be aware that some games have been suffering with artifacting issues, and so it’s built a tool which can help developers detect those issues quicker. The theory being, we suppose, that if the problems are easier to find they can be fixed must faster.

The downside to all this is it sounds like existing games will need to be patched to take advantage of the new features, so you’ll be relying on the support of your favourite developers yet again.

However, if it’s able to get the tech into the hands of Rockstar as early as possible, then there’s every chance GTA 6 may ship with these features at launch. And that’s going to sell a lot of PS5 Pro consoles, isn’t it?
