Instagram has introduced a unique “signature sound” for Reels, which will automatically be added to the end of every video downloaded from the platform.

Essentially, it resembles the sound of skateboarding crashes in Tony Hawk Pro Skater or repeatedly clicking on a glitching error message. But according to Instagram, it encapsulates the platform’s spirit in a single audio cue.

So, what exactly is this “signature sound”?

Surprisingly, it’s kind of nothing and everything all at once. It doesn’t serve a specific function or hold any inherent meaning, yet it contributes to Instagram’s brand identity, aiming to make it instantly recognizable as the sound associated with the app.

You might wonder why they selected this particular sound?

Instagram claims this is part of their new “sonic identity”:

“From mild to wild, our Creative Audio and Brand teams devised, refined, and evaluated numerous sounds to create the perfect vibe: an iconic yet simple audio piece that works seamlessly with every Reel.”

The Instagram team reportedly undertook extensive testing of various sounds while attributing emotional significance to each one.

“We aimed to create a vibe that felt punctuated yet imperfect, serving as a metaphor for the everyday creativity that doesn’t need to be flawless to be shared.”

The phrase “brought a vibe,” as professional jargon, can undermine your credibility, but somehow this audio symbolizes a blend of Reels’ sounds and sentiments.

So, upon downloading a Reel, that’s what you can expect to hear. While it may not rival TikTok’s iconic bass drop, it’s definitely memorable. Let’s hope the artists involved are receiving their royalties.
