Because of, you guessed it, RAM and SSD shortages
- by Ben Kerry
It’s a bit of a whirlwind right now in terms of next-gen news, isn’t it? We’ve heard directly from AMD that the next Xbox is “progressing well” to release in 2027, while other reports have suggested that component shortages and price increases could delay next-gen consoles into 2028 or even later. Today, Bloomberg adds fuel to that fire by suggesting that Sony is already considering pushing back its PS6 launch to “2028 or even 2029” – throwing next-gen timing across the board into doubt.
Yep, a new report from the tech outlet goes into detail on AI and the issues its causing for computer components right now. The article is paywalled, but The Verge’s Tom Warren has shared an interesting section of it that mentions Sony, Nintendo and their future console plans. We’ll share that snippet from the report down below:
Of course, this doesn’t mention Xbox or Microsoft directly, but all of these companies are in the same boat in terms of component shortages and rising prices. It stands to reason that if Sony and Nintendo are thinking of changing plans due to all of this, Microsoft could be thinking of taking a similar path – although none of that is confirmed at this time.
Having said that, Team Green’s approach to next-gen might actually help them here. We’ve heard pretty consistently that the next Xbox won’t be a traditional console coming in at a lower price point; with other third-party manufacturers potentially taking point in terms of building some of the actual hardware too – like the Asus ROG Xbox Ally. Could this rumoured plan to move away from more mass-market console gaming help Microsoft here?
We can only wait and see what happens, but more and more reports are starting to flood in suggesting that 2027 could be a rather ambitious timeline for next-gen hardware. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier even suggests that releasing next year would be a “disaster” for everyone involved!
What do you think to this latest doom and gloom about next-gen consoles? Talk to us about the Bloomberg report down below.

New Report On PS6 Delay Throws Next-Gen Timing Into Doubt
PS6 release Expectations Under Scrutiny
The gaming community has been buzzing with anticipation for Sony’s PlayStation 6 (PS6). Traditionally, Sony has launched new console generations roughly every 6-7 years, making a launch around 2027 the common speculation. However, a new report suggests potential delays in the PS6 launch timeline, casting doubt on next-gen expectations and stirring uncertainty among fans and industry watchers alike.
This sudden speculation raises concerns about whether the PS6 will arrive on schedule or see a postponement that pushes the console’s release further into the late 2020s.With strong competition from Microsoft’s Xbox series and advancements in cloud gaming technology, the timing of the PS6 release becomes all the more critical.
what The Latest Report Indicates
Insiders and credible leaks confirm that although PS6 growth is progressing, Sony’s finalized specs reveal complexities that might contribute to a delayed launch. According to leaks confirmed by KeplerL2 and corroborated by MLiD, the PS6 will target considerably enhanced performance levels, including the following rumored technical specifications:
| Specification | PS6 Expected Spec |
|---|---|
| RAM | 24 GB (handheld), 30 GB (console) |
| AI Performance | Approx. 1200 TOPs |
| CPU/GPU | Custom AMD Zen 4 & RDNA 3+ |
| Storage | Integrated NVMe SSD (size TBD) |
While these next-gen specs promise improvements that will obviously set new industry standards, the complexity of hardware advancements may require additional time for refinement and manufacturing, potentially causing production or release delays.[1]
Impact of PS6 Delay on the Next-Gen Console Ecosystem
A delay in PS6’s launch could have ripple effects thru the next-gen console ecosystem, affecting game developers, competitors, and gamers themselves. Here are the key areas potentially impacted by a delayed release:
- Consumer Sentiment: Enthusiastic fans might become impatient, risking a loss of momentum and excitement surrounding Sony’s brand.
- Third-Party Game Development: Developers may need to extend support for the PS5 generation or reallocate resources in uncertainty about the next platform.
- Competitive Advantage: Microsoft and Nintendo could capitalize on a delayed PS6 by strengthening their offerings or accelerating releases.
- Technological Innovations: Extended development periods might allow Sony to integrate cutting-edge technologies such as improved AI processing or superior VR support, beyond initial plans.
Comparing PS6 Timing to historical Console Releases
Looking back at Sony’s previous launches:
| Console | Release Year | Years Between Generations |
|---|---|---|
| PS3 | 2006 | – |
| PS4 | 2013 | 7 years |
| PS5 | 2020 | 7 years |
| PS6 (Speculated) | 2027 or later | 7+ years (possibly delayed) |
This timeline shows Sony’s pattern of long generation lifespans. A delay could push PS6 beyond 2027, marking one of the longest waits the PlayStation brand has experienced.[3]
Potential Advances Beyond Hardware: Controller Innovations
Beyond raw horsepower, user experience improvements are a major focus for the PS6. A popular topic discussed in fan communities and industry forums is the possible upgrade of controllers, especially concerning the notorious “stick drift” issue in earlier PlayStation controllers.
Reports suggest Sony could replace the traditional potentiometer analog sticks with advanced TMR (Tunnel Magneto-Resistance) sticks or Hall Effect sensors. Unlike current potentiometer sticks, these would greatly reduce wear-induced drift, improving longevity and gameplay precision on PS6 controllers. This hardware shift, while subtle, could bolster the appeal of the new tech and might require further R&D time, influencing the overall console timeline.[2]
Are Next-Gen Games Impacted by PS6 Uncertainty?
Another angle involves how game publishers and studios might adjust to a delayed PS6 release. Titles such as Gran Turismo 8 have been widely speculated to be PS6 launch titles, but the delay rumors suggest they may remain incumbent generation exclusives or cross-gen for longer periods.
This could mean:
- Delayed next-gen exclusive titles, pushing more cross-gen releases.
- Longer lifecycle for PS5 games and accessories.
- Potential financial and creative shifts for game studios delaying major project launches.
Industry experts estimate the zero chance of GT8 launching with PS6, instead favoring a PS5 or cross-gen focus for the time being.[3]
Summary of Key Considerations for PS6 Launch Timing
| Category | Potential Impact |
|---|---|
| Hardware Complexity | High-spec components may delay production time |
| Controller Tech Upgrades | Improved stick tech adds R&D time |
| Competitive Pressure | Microsoft & Nintendo could capitalize on delays |
| Game Development Shift | Extended PS5 support, delayed next-gen exclusives |
| Consumer Demand | Risk of reduced excitement and pre-orders |
