YouTube expands its Premium Lite subscription tier to include offline downloads and background watching, previously only available in the full plan.

In its broader push to make its paid offerings more enticing, YouTube has announced the expansion of its $7.99 per month Premium Lite subscription with some new features. This includes offline downloads—the ability to download videos for offline access—and the ability to watch videos in the background or when the screen is off. Previously, these functions were only available to subscribers of the full YouTube Premium plan, which currently runs $13.99 per month.

Of course, the Premium Lite subscription also offers ad-free viewing for “most” videos on the platform, TechCrunch notes. That doesn’t include music videos and other music content—nor does Premium Lite include access to the ad-free YouTube Music app.

In the bigger picture, this means the only reason to upgrade to a full Premium subscription is to access ad-free music content across both audio and video. However, it also means the Lite tier will be more enticing for users who don’t use YouTube for music, or those who wanted more features than just ad-free content.

YouTube says the availability of the new features will be “rolling out everywhere” Premium Lite is available within the coming weeks.

The Lite tier was introduced in Thailand, Germany, and Australia first, and then rolled out in the U.S. last year. Now it’s available across regions including Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the UK, India, and elsewhere across Europe and Asia.

YouTube subscriptions have been on the rise over the past several months. The company reported that, including ads, its overall revenue hit $60 billion last year. YouTube parent Alphabet also reported over 125 million YouTube Music and YouTube Premium users worldwide back in March 2025. That metric hasn’t been updated to reflect its Q4 earnings, but the company reported over 325 million paid subscriptions across its services, including YouTube Premium, Music, and Google One.
